Colosseum Park, House of the Gryphons opens to the public, also live in real time

The Colosseum Archaeological Park has opened to the public the House of the Griffins: it is one of the oldest domus from the Republican age on the Palatine Hill, discovered in the early 20th century and famous for its refined pictorial and mosaic apparatus, which has come down to us in an exceptional state of preservation.

The Colosseum Archaeological Park has opened to the public the House of the Griffins, the second intervention among the ten planned in the Caput Mundi National Recovery and Resilience Plan under Mission 1 Digitization, Innovation, Competitiveness, Culture and Tourism. It is one of the oldest domus from the Republican age on the Palatine, discovered by Giacomo Boni in the early 20th century and famous for its refined pictorial and mosaic apparatus, which has come down to us in an exceptional state of preservation.

The project, entrusted to the sole responsibility of Federica Rinaldi and the direction of works by Aura Picchione, was completed in December 2024 in full compliance with the timelines established by the PNRR. The restoration and consolidation works followed an integrated approach, which included three-dimensional photogrammetric surveys and the recovery of the pictorial surfaces.

The funds allocated have made it possible to start a program of scientific study and conservation of the monument, addressing both problems related to the pictorial apparatus and those of a structural nature. Indeed, the investigations revealed ancient signs of movement of the wall portions, responsible for gaps on the walls, plaster detachments and unevenness in the mosaic flooring. In the months that followed, a new lighting system was installed and an audio-video system for a live real time visit was set up, conceived by Federica Rinaldi and developed with the technical supervision of Stefano Borghini. The intervention was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Comoli Ferrari and allowed the final opening of the site to the public. The digital solution also responds to accessibility needs: in fact, the underground part of the House of the Gryphons can be reached only by a very steep staircase, which makes the visit in presence complex for all visitors.
