In the archaeological area of Halaesa Arconidea, discovered remains of one of the largest thermal baths in Sicily

In the archaeological area of Halaesa Arconidea, Messina, two rooms with mosaic floors, a courtyard with porticoed wings and the remains of a bathhouse have emerged. The latter is among the most extensive in Sicily.

In the archaeological area of Halaesa Arconidea, in Tusa, Messina, two rooms with mosaic floors, a courtyard with porticoed wings and the remains of a thermal facility have emerged. These findings were made as part of the fifth excavation campaign, carried out by theUniversity of Palermo in collaboration with the Tindari Archaeological Park and the municipality of the town in the province of Messina.

The excavations also revealed a vast monumental complex, hitherto unknown, consisting of a network of roads and a new stretch of fortifications, which will be crucial to the reconstruction of the town’s urban layout in Hellenistic and Roman times.

“The thermal facility that has come to light,” said Cultural Heritage Councillor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, “represents a unicum in Sicily for its very rich decorative apparatus and for its size, amounting to about 800 square meters, among the largest on the island.”

“Given the importance of the archaeological findings,” said Domenico Targia, acting director of the Tindari Archaeological Park, “the site will immediately be the subject of punctual conservative restoration and safety measures in order to ensure its enhancement and enjoyment.”
