Queen consort of France, wife of Henry II, and known as the queen mother for having given birth to three sovereigns of France, namely Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III, Catherine was the daughter of Lorenzo de’ Medici, duke of Urbino, and Maddalena de La Tour d’Auvergne. She came to the French court as a teenager and orphan to secure her own dowry and produce many heirs. She later discovered that her husband was in love with an older woman and was unable to conceive an heir. Only through her determination was she able to keep her marriage alive and master the monarchy, ruling France for fifty years.

Based on Leonie Frieda ’s book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France, The Serpent Queen series will run for eight episodes; playing Catherine de’ Medici will be award-winning British actress Samantha Morton. The series is produced for Starz by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment and written by Justin Haythe. Filming has the support of the Genoa Liguria Film Commission, the City of Genoa and the Region of Liguria.
