Circus Maximo Experience: the Circus Maximo in virtual and augmented reality

From July 14 to August 13, the Circus Maximus Experience, an immersive experience to relive the ancient building, can be visited at Circus Maximus.

From July 14 to Aug. 13, Circo Maximo Experience, the immersive augmented and virtual reality tour of the largest performing arts building of antiquity and one of the largest of all time, the Circus Maximus, will reopen to the public during evening hours. It will be open extraordinarily for 22 evenings, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., before the start of the performances of Opera al Circo Massimo, the summer opera and ballet season of the Rome Opera House, which will take place precisely in the large area of the Circus Maximus.

One of the most significant monuments in Rome’s history, the Circus Maximus is coming back to life through an augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) enhancement project. For the first time, the Circus will be visitable in all its historical phases thanks to an experience using interactive visualization technologies never before employed in such a large outdoor area.

With Circus Maximo Experience, visitors will be able to see the life of the ancient valley unfold before their eyes, stroll through Roman stores and watch a chariot race amid shouts of incitement and the flipping of chariots, in a continuous cross-reference between present and past.

The tour, lasting about 40 minutes, is available in eight languages (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Japanese). The eight stages include: the Valley and the origins of the Circus, the Circus from Julius Caesar to Trajan, the Circus in the Imperial Age, the Cavea, the Arch of Titus, the Shops (tabernae), the Circus in the Medieval and Modern Ages, and finally A Day at the Circus.

The visit can be enjoyed with immersive viewers (see-through technology) and stereophonic headset systems, included in the ticket price.

The visit with a viewer can also be enjoyed by deaf people thanks to simplified subtitles in Italian or English.
