From Sept. 14 to Oct. 26, for nine evenings, the Special Superintendent of Rome will extraordinarily open the Baths of Caracalla from 8 to 10 p.m., with two different ways of visiting: a free walk through the undergrounds and the Mithraeum, or a guided tour that will also give the public the chance to discover the Baths of Caracalla above ground, among the gymnasium, natatio, frigidarium and mosaics.
“The evening visits to the Baths of Caracalla are an appointment that visitors are fond of,” says Daniela Porro, Special Superintendent of Rome, “and that is renewed every summer and fall. What attracts tourists and especially Romans is the fascination of the most important imperial thermal facility that is revealed in the light of dusk and night: a unique opportunity to access the monument beyond the usual opening hours.”
"After the successes of the special Sunday openings at the museum, and the important response of the still ongoing exhibition dedicated to Letizia Battaglia,“ commented Mirella Serlorenzi, director of the site, ”the Baths of Caracalla are preparing to welcome visitors in the nighttime hours, proposing an ever-new and lively cultural offer, before the new features in store for the fall season. Preserved for about two kilometers, the dungeons were a labyrinth of large carriageable tunnels, 6 meters high by 6 meters wide approximately, where there were lumber yards, a mill, the heating system with furnaces and boilers, but also the water system."
Evening tours allow visitors to walk in the park of the Baths among the large rooms where marvelous mosaics are still visible in the place where they were made. In the basement, visitors will be able to see the engineering techniques of the Roman world, not only because of the mighty foundations, but because of the modernity of the thermal and hydraulic machinery that powered the entire system, the heating of the water and the rooms on the ground floor and in the upper floor.
