Gustave Courbet's Ornans studio opens to the public with guided tours

After a lengthy restoration, Gustave Courbet's last country studio in Ornans opens its doors to the public. Guided tours by appointment.

After a major restoration campaign that began in 2019, Gustave Courbet ’s studio in Ornans opens its doors to the public on February 5, 2022. Built in 1860, it was imagined by the artist as an ideal studio, a place of creation immersed in the countryside, but also a place of sociability and intellectual exchanges where Courbet received his best-known admirers. He therefore shaped this place in his own image.

It was in this country studio that the artist created his last great works, such as the Hallali du cerf, housed in the Museum of Fine Arts and Archeology in Besançon. The large wall painting completed by the painter, depicting landscapes and a sky dotted with swallows, can still be seen here.

This is thelast studio in Ornans where Gustave Courbet lived and worked from 1860 to 1873, when he left in exile for Switzerland. The artist had personally overseen the purchase of this former foundry and its transformation into a studio. Upon the artist’s death, his sister Juliette started the first museum dedicated to him here. Acquired by the Doubs Departmental Council in 2008, it is listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments.

You can visit the studio until May 31, 2022 by reservation with guided tours lasting about 50 minutes. You can buy tickets online at www.musee-courbet.fr or at the Courbet Museum box office. The cost is 4 euros and free if the guided tour of the studio is combined with a visit to the Courbet Museum.

Hours: Saturdays and Sundays at 3:45 p.m., except March 12, 20 and 26, April 2, 3 and 9, and May 14 and 15.
