National Historic Houses Day: open doors throughout Italy on May 24

The 16th edition of the ADSI event will allow hundreds of historic mansions, castles and gardens to be visited free of charge, revealing a little-known but widespread heritage throughout the country.

On Sunday, May 24, theAssociazione Dimore Storiche Italiane (ADSI) is celebrating the 16th National Historic Houses Day, opening hundreds of historic residences, castles and gardens scattered throughout the country to the public free of charge. The initiative, which represents the largest widespread museum in Italy, offers visitors the opportunity to access places rich in history, often little known and off the traditional tourist routes. The theme chosen for 2026, Keepers of the Future. A living heritage for a shared value, emphasizes the collective responsibility in the protection and enhancement of these cultural assets, an expression of the country’s historical and cultural roots.

Historical residences, despite being listed private properties, perform a relevant public and social function, generating value in the territories, particularly in smaller towns and inland areas, where the presence of these residences constitutes a widespread cultural infrastructure. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and making usable these assets for local communities, so that they continue to contribute to the cultural, social and economic value of the regions where they are located.

“ADSI’s National Day,” says Maria Pace Odescalchi, president of the Italian Historic Houses Association, “now represents an important and well-established event in the calendar of cultural activities in Italy, which places at the center of our country’s agenda a vast cultural heritage present in all our regions: in 2025 alone, more than 500 residences joined the event, welcoming more than 250,000 visitors. It is also a valuable opportunity to reflect on the need to encourage the protection and maintenance of this cultural infrastructure of our country, ideally with support tools that allow proactive management and medium- and long-term planning, to ensure that these widespread assets continue to be a resource for our country and for future generations.”
