Perugino's Sansepolcro Altarpiece on display in Perugia. It had never left its original location

As part of the Perugino in the Sign of Time project, the Perugia Chapter Museum is exhibiting Perugino's Sansepolcro Altarpiece from June 16 to September 17, 2023. The work had never left its original home, the Cathedral of Sansepolcro.

As part of the Perugino in the Sign of Time project, from Friday, June 16 to Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, the Sansepolcro Altarpiece depicting theAscension of Christ painted by Pietro Vannucci known as Perugino in 1510 will be on display inside the Perugia Chapter Museum (part of Isola di San Lorenzo), recently refurbished for the centenary of its founding. The altarpiece had never left its original home, the Cathedral of Sansepolcro.

The commissioner of the painting was identified as Simone Graziani, born in Sansepolcro in 1449, a member of an ancient family of Perugia origin and a patron of his city. The theme of theAscension is recurrent in artistic commissions in the town of Biturg, both in the medieval and Renaissance periods.

In the lower part of the altarpiece is the Virgin Mary with on either side the group of apostles immersed in the Umbrian landscape; in the upper part of the work, on the other hand, the figure of the risen Jesus stands out, enclosed within a mandorla with a gold background, a symbol of eternity and Paradise, and surrounded by musician angels. The work presents the traditional iconography of the Divine Painter, who painted the work for Sansepolcro tracing the model already used for the Polyptych of St. Peter (Perugia) and whose central compartment is now in Lyon.

TheIsland of San Lorenzo is offering, in collaboration with theAbbey of St. Peter, a cumulative ticket costing 14 euros that will allow the public to admire theAscension of Sansepolcro (Museo del Capitolo) and some of the predellas of the Polyptych of St. Peter, from the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen and the Pinacoteca Vaticana in Rome, which will be temporarily displayed inside the Abbey.

Following the exhibition of the Sansepolcro Altarpiece will also launch other initiatives related to the celebrations of the fifth centenary of Perugino’s death that will characterize the activities of Isola San Lorenzo throughout 2023.
