Civica Pinacoteca il Guercino hosts an afternoon of studies on the role of art exhibitions, between historical legacy and contemporary challenges, on Nov. 30. Talks by historians, curators and journalists in the field are scheduled.

The Civica Pinacoteca il Guercino in Cento(Ferrara) will host on Sunday, November 30, 2025 an afternoon of studies dedicated to the theme of art exhibitions, entitled Exhibiting. The role of art exhibitions between legacy of the past and new visions. The initiative, organized by the International Study Center "il Guercino,“ will take place in the ”F. Zarri" Room of the Governor’s Palace from 3 to 7 p.m., as part of +2. Pinacoteca celebrates its second anniversary, of the Pinacoteca’s second anniversary celebrations. The meeting will open with institutional greetings, followed by the announcement of the winner of the Sir Denis Mahon International Essay Prize, Edition 2025, an award dedicated to research and reflection on artistic heritage. Following this, a series of speeches will compare different experiences related to the organization of exhibitions and the management of collections, with the aim of critically analyzing the dynamics governing the enjoyment and appreciation of art.

Luigi Ficacci, art historian and museum manager, will offer an in-depth discussion entitled Bologna 1968: the Guercino of Denis Mahon, recalling the exhibition that represented a fundamental moment for the revaluation of the painter. Caterina Volpi, professor of Art History at Sapienza University of Rome and curator of the recent exhibition Guercino, the Ludovisi era at the Scuderie del Quirinale, will illustrate the results and critical issues related to the success of the exhibition initiative, curated together with Raffaella Morselli. A contribution from direct experience of museum management will be provided by Matteo Lafranconi, director of the Scuderie del Quirinale, with the talk What is not shown: management complexities and diplomatic architectures in the organization of an art exhibition. Federico Giannini, a journalist specializing in art and cultural heritage and editor-in-chief of Finestre sull’Arte magazine, will lead a reflection on the meaning and purpose of exhibitions, with the title Why exhibit and which exhibitions?, proposing an analysis of the criteria for choosing works, audiences and contemporary curatorial models. The proceedings will be moderated by Giovanni Sassu and Valeria Tassinari, who will coordinate debate and questions from the audience. The meeting provides an in-depth opportunity for scholars, professionals in the field and enthusiasts, offering an overview of the transformations of art exhibitions in the context of contemporary cultural enhancement.
