One year after the death of sculptor Giuliano Vangi, the Liceo Artistico Fausto Melotti of Cantù, together with the Associazione Amici dei Musei, the Associazione Amici del Melotti, the Municipality of Cantù and with the support of public and private entities, is organizing - as part of the 13th edition of the Festival del Legno - a major exhibition entitled Vangi and the School of Cantù, scheduled from Sept. 24 to Nov. 23, 2025. The official opening is scheduled for Friday, September 26 at 6 p.m. at the Liceo Melotti.
The exhibition will be held in two locations: the Library of the Liceo Artistico Fausto Melotti (formerly the Istituto Statale d’Arte), which preserves the memory of Vangi’s teaching period, and the Park of the Basilica of San Vincenzo in Galliano, a space intended to house some of his monumental outdoor works.
A leading figure in contemporary sculpture, Giuliano Vangi left a deep mark on the city of Cantù, where he taught between 1963 and 1969 at the then State Institute of Art.
The exhibition aims to restore the artistic and pedagogical legacy that Vangi was able to pass on to his students. It will display didactic works in wood and plaster, archival documents, photographs, drawings, sculptural sketches and large-format works from the Copernico Studio related to the years of his teaching in Cantur. Vangi adopted an innovative teaching approach, capable of dialoguing with the aesthetic currents of his time and leaving behind a human and cultural heritage that this exhibition aims to highlight.
The exhibition is part of the program of the 13th edition of Cantù Città del Mobile - Festival del Legno ( Cantù City of Furniture - Wood Festival), an event that has been enhancing the area’s craft and design tradition since 2013. In this context, the exhibition takes on a strong identity meaning: it is a tribute to the great sculptor and a testimony to the link between art, school and community. Vangi’s works will dialogue with the spirit of the Festival, which celebrates design, craftsmanship and formal research, interweaving memory and contemporaneity. The 2025 edition, entitled Unique Pieces, finds full resonance in the artist’s work: his sculptures embody the expressive power of matter and the uniqueness of creative paths.
