A promise of immortality, a solo exhibition by Pablo Candiloro (Buenos Aires, 1976) opens Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Giampaolo Abbondio Gallery in Todi. The exhibition, curated by Massimo Mattioli, will remain open until Feb. 26, 2022. The exhibition presents the most recent pictorial production of the Argentine artist, already the protagonist in 2017 of a solo show at Galleria Pack in Milan. The exhibition itinerary in Todi, designed as a very personal storytelling, is proposed as a tribute to the “immortality” of painting.

The gallery’s four rooms display some 40 paintings, illustrating the three series that have engaged the artist over the past four years. Starting with the monumental canvases of"Tomorrow by the Sea" and"Dehydration." The latter is presented as an installation composed of twenty individual works, self-portraits of great artists of the past that Candiloro reinterprets. Here a key conceptual passage emerges: the artist burns with a heat gun the color he has just applied, thus “killing” the painting. He then “resurrects” it with new perspectives. In the latest series,"Infinite Palette,“ there is in fact a kind of formal ”restart": the classical themes of painting, flowers, landscape, architecture, human figure, return. Although, in this case, the works are influenced by the above pandemic climate: with the tones becoming almost livid, mirroring the artist’s state of mind.

“Attempting to focus on a single work by Pablo risks leading one astray,” writes curator Massimo Mattioli in the catalog text. “His work should in fact be observed in its globality, where there is always a before and an after. Where actions and reactions follow one another cyclically.” According to Mattioli, the exhibition path is “a bumpy trajectory, always marked by his experience, his emotions, his reflections on reality. Painting is one of the certainties that accompany him: following the syncopated rhythm of his existence.”

On the occasion of the exhibition opening, the gallery will join the 17th Day of the Contemporary promoted by AMACI. For more information, you can visit the Giampaolo Abbondio Gallery website.
