At the Modena Civic Museums, an exhibition dedicated to comics, with a virus-themed section

The City Museums of Modena host the exhibition Very Animated Years. Carousel, SuperGulp! Comix. Featuring a collection of entirely virus-themed drawings.

At the Modena Municipal Museums, the exhibition dedicated to the comic strip Anni molto animati reopens to the public on May 20. Carousel, SuperGulp! Comix, extended until June 28, 2020. It is possible to visit the exhibition free of charge by reservation, respecting the required security measures.

The exhibition presents the history of Modenese comics and animation from the 1950s to the 1990s: from the most famous characters of the Carosello television theater, with the Gulp! and Supergulp! broadcasts, to Comix, the famous “comic newspaper” signed by well-known actors, comedians and artists. Anni molto animati intends to offer a never-before-seen cross-section of local and national history, reflecting the social and consumer transformations associated with the economic boom: more than three hundred original drawings from public and private collections, technical equipment, photographs and merchandise accompanied by audio-video stations.

Compared to the exhibition itinerary set up before the forced closure, the exhibition offers new features born precisely during the days of lockdown: among them, the section Anni molto animati durante il lockdown, a collection of entirely virus-themed drawings made by Bonfa (Massimo Bonfatti), Clod (Claudio Onesti), Buffo (Cesare Buffagni), Michele Bernardi, Andrea Greppi and Maria Claudia Di Genova, Mario Del Pennino and Guido De Maria, to which is added a drawing by Silver (Guido Silvestri) executed on the occasion of the reopening.

Among the most famous characters are the Little Man with the Moustache, Angelino, Toto and Tata, Miguel-son-mì, the Sturmtruppen, Corto Maltese and Lupo Alberto. Also, well-known Disney characters, Osvaldo Cavandoli’s Linea and Altan’s Pimpa, the creations of Clod, Bonfa, Roberto Baldazzini and Claudio Nizzi’s scripts for Tex.

The exhibition is curated by Stefano Bulgarelli and emphasizes the continuity of a humorous and comic milieu that spans the entire twentieth century and is well evident in most of the works on display.

Thanks to the City of Modena’s digital publishing house Il Dondolo, a free downloadable e-book has also been created to discover insights and curiosities.
With the reopening of the exhibition, visitors will also be able to purchase for 10 euros, at the bookshop, a collectible numbered humorous print created by Bonfa and signed together with Guido De Maria. An original work that summarizes many creative and professional moments of the long career of the same artist, doyen of the Modenese school of comics and animation. All proceeds will be donated to “Emerald City aps” for the “New Ancient Forests” project.

The exhibition benefits from the collaboration of Historical Institute, FMAV and Franco Cosimo Panini Editore, and is realized with the support of Cremonini Group, Despar and Garc.
