Bologna's LabOratorio degli Angeli presents Eva Marisaldi's site-specific project

Bologna's LabOratorio degli Angeli presents Eva Marisaldi's site-specific project "Guarda caso" from January 30 to February 19, 2023. It is among the Main projects of ART CITY Bologna 2023.

From January 30 to February 19, 2023, Bologna ’s LabOratorio degli Angeli presents Guarda caso, a site-specific project by Eva Marisaldi, curated by Leonardo Regano and realized in collaboration with Bologna’s Galleria De’ Foscherari, among the main projects of ART CITY Bologna 2023 on the occasion of Arte Fiera.

Eva Marisaldi’s work enters into dialogue with the spaces of Bologna’s historic restoration workshop, weaving a confrontation in a site-specific intervention that is articulated between works reactivated for the occasion and new productions. Marisaldi reinterprets the LabOratorio degli Angeli as a large transient archive, a temporary custodian of works and art objects that in their chance encounter tell a constantly evolving story.

The exhibition path opens with Narcissus (2022), an unprecedented sculpture that mixes expressive languages by proposing asound and light action that confronts random aesthetics: a sound box that projects laser patterns of red light on the ceiling and has at its top two hands made of silver wire that mimic the play of elastic bands between their fingers with their gestures.

It continues with the large work tables of the former Oratory, on which he arranges a selection of works from those currently under restoration accompanied by a graphic intervention inspired by them and winding through the room for several meters. “Clouds of rhythmic and recurrent scribbles,” as the artist defines them, created thanks to a robotic device produced in collaboration with Enrico Serotti. In dialogue with an engraving depicting St. Magdalene de’ Pazzi, the artist displays material from her personal archive related to the performance Changing bags, made at Studio Guenzani in 1992 and inspired by the Carmelite mystic.

“I interpret this intervention of mine,” Marisaldi declares, “as a collaboration with the laboratory, not only for the pleasure of encountering (and bringing together) interesting materials, whose presence is as casual as it is temporary, but also to organize a sort of exhibition of the aforementioned selected materials together with my own, relevant works. Two years ago I did something like this, in different ways, at the CSAC in Parma. Almost all the works in the exhibition are very much related to the idea of looking at the forming of the works, limiting the artist’s intervention to an accompanying form of becoming. The difference between 2007, when we made the first drawings for parties with a machine that paints with a brush ande ink, and today is that in the meantime we have come to believe (as science tells us) that our presence influences reality.”

In connection with her intervention in the former Oratory, Eva Marisaldi proposes on the walls of the adjoining room the installation of some large papers from the Parties cycle (2006-2007), following a new conservation methodology proposed in collaboration with the LabOratorio degli Angeli.

In the Library room, 3000 Pages, a sound work that the artist produced in April 2018 in the small Theater of Villa Aldrovandi Mazzacorati, Bologna, is presented. The artist asked a group of volunteer performers to participate in a collective action, flipping through the pages of a phone book in unison under the direction of musician Enrico Serotti. The end result, asound wave derived from the montage of the recording of several actions and transmitted through large speakers made of cardboard sheets, is declined by the artist in a reference to paper and its evocative materiality.

With the Guarda Caso project, the LabOratorio degli Angeli continues a well-established exhibition tradition, opening its doors to the public on the occasion of ART CITY to pay homage to yesterday’s and today’s protagonists of Italian art, with an exclusive event in which historical-critical insight is combined with the study of the conservation issues of contemporary and large formats.
