Elliott Erwitt's vintage photographs, rarely shown to the public, on display in Abano Terme

The Villa Bassi Rathgeb Museum in Abano Terme welcomes more than 150 vintage photographs and thirty iconic shots by Elliott Erwitt from Jan. 28 to June 11, 2023 for the exhibition "Vintage" dedicated to the famous photographer.

From January 28 to June 11, 2023, the Villa Bassi Rathgeb Museum in Abano Terme will host the exhibition Vintage by Elliott Erwitt, among the greatest living photographers. Curated by Marco Minuz and organized by the Cultural Department of the City of Abano Terme in collaboration with Suazes and CoopCulture, the exhibition will feature 154 vintage photographs that have rarely been shown to the public and thirty iconic shots spanning sixty years of photography history.

The exhibition will be enhanced by audiovisual material dedicated to the great photographer to further explore his long production.

The body of photographs in the exhibition allows visitors to focus on the main themes he dealt with: from the theme of racial integration in America after World War II to the social mutations of American society, continuing with the theme of nudism. Also, dogs, children, world travel.

His shots tell a cross-section of twentieth-century history and customs through a deeply ironic gaze that characterizes the famous photographer. His black-and-white photographs tell a unique and personal view of the world, unfocused on the external context and landscape and concentrating on what people and animals really do. They represent the everyday life of each of us.

“With this initiative we want to give continuity to the project started with the two previous exhibitions dedicated to Eve Arnold and Robert Capa, an exhibition of the latter that was an extraordinary success with more than 13,000 people and that demonstrates how much potential the project focused on the photography of the great masters and strongly desired by the Municipal Administration has,” said Culture Councillor Michela Allocca.

“Abano with this new initiative pursues in a very precise direction, which is to delve into the work of the undisputed masters of the international photographic scene with in-depth projects created ad hoc to offer the public an offer of the highest level and thus connote the museum spaces of Villa Bassi Rathgeb as a place of multidisciplinary dialogues and comparisons,” added curator Marco Minuz.
