Exhibition dedicated to Ottone Rosai reopens in Montevarchi. Extended until June 2021

After being closed for two months, an exhibition dedicated to Ottone Rosai reopens in Montevarchi, displaying, among other works, unpublished works.

From Jan. 21, 2021, the exhibition dedicated to Ottone Rosai (Florence 1895 - Ivrea 1957) reopens in Montevarchi (Arezzo), held at the Palazzo del Podestà. After more than two months of closure, the exhibition will be extended until June 6, 2021. Organized by the Municipality of Montevarchi, the exhibition brings together fifty of the artist’s works, including drawings and oils, between 1919 and 1932, the years between the two wars. Rosai chose to read the novelties of his time in the light of the great art of the 14th and 15th centuries in Tuscany.

The works on display come from private collections, some are well-known canvases, while others are entirely new, rediscovered in proven collections and in the homes of those in Tuscany and beyond who had dealings with the artist or his gallerists and heirs.

The exhibition had already opened on October 29, 2020, immediately gaining great interest from the public and critics, but it was closed after a few days, on November 6, following the November dpcm. Now the public can visit it, following all the planned antiCovid measures, on Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m.

“We are happy to be able to return to the public an important exhibition that took several months of preparation to search and study works. Efforts that in many cases led to discoveries of unpublished works. Thanks to the generosity of all the lenders of the works we are, moreover, able to extend it until June 6,” said Silvia Chiassai Martini, mayor of Montevarchi.

“Discos open in the summer and museums closed in the winter I hope they have taught everyone something,” commented curator Giovanni Faccenda. “Rosai, who weathered two blizzards unscathed, represented by as many world wars, awaits visitors with his paintings and drawings that are, and remain, mirrors of torrid existential anxieties destined to repeat themselves over time and at any latitude, although, as Montale rightly argued, life is unfortunately, as usual, a teacher of nothing that concerns us.”
