In Bologna the first institutional exhibition in Europe by Roger Deakins

The Sottopasso di Piazza Re Enzo in Bologna is hosting the exhibition "Byways. The Photographs of Roger Deakins," the first institutional exhibition in Europe dedicated to the master of photography for film.

Until January 15, 2023, the Sottopasso di Piazza Re Enzo in Bologna is hosting the exhibition Byways. The Photographs of Roger Deakins, curated by James Ellis Deakins, promoted by the Cineteca di Bologna in collaboration with Fondazione MAST and the Damiani publishing house.

This is the first institutional exhibition in Europe dedicated to Roger Deakins, a master of cinematography for film with two Academy Awards in his palmarès and 15 nominations. He has given light and color to dozens of Hollywood masterpieces, becoming an important collaborator for authors such as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes, Denis Villeneuve.

The exhibition stems from Deakins’ first and eponymous monograph published by Damiani in 2021. The exhibition will feature more than fifty black-and-white photographs featured in the book, as well as a series of previously unpublished shots. The images are taken by Deakins at different times and in different places: the rural areas of North Devon tell of a now vanished England of cattle fairs, unspoiled nature and traditions; a large section is devoted to the sea, Deakins’ great love, a protagonist among the various landscapes photographed around the world. His images testify to a deeply ironic Anglo-Saxon sensibility and a keen and curious look at life on the back roads, as the title Byways suggests.
