M.C. Escher is the protagonist of a major exhibition that brings together all his masterpieces at the Centro Altinate - San Gaetano in Padua, open from Feb. 18 to July 19, 2026, an exhibition curated by Federico Giudiceandrea that celebrates one of the most fascinating of the twentieth century, capable of fusing scientific rigor and visionary imagination by transforming complex concepts of geometry and mathematics into images of extraordinary poetic force, through perfect tessellations, daring perspective constructions, astonishing optical illusions and impossible worlds that challenge logic and question the very perception of reality.
The exhibition itinerary takes visitors on a journey to discover the Dutch master’s entire creative parabola, from his youthful beginnings still linked to the representation of landscape and architecture, to his travels to Italy and the Mediterranean countries that profoundly influenced his visual sensibility, to his full artistic maturity in which the famous metamorphoses, infinite structures and geometric paradoxes that made him world-famous were established.
Through woodcuts, lithographs and etchings, the exhibition aims to highlight the different graphic techniques he experimented with throughout his life, emphasizing the almost scientific precision of his working method and the constant search for balance between art and science, order and imagination, rationality and wonder; among reflective surfaces, staircases that rise and fall simultaneously, figures that transform into each other and spaces that wrap around themselves in a continuum with no beginning or end, the visitor is invited to explore a visual universe in which every detail is studied with millimeter-like attention and every image conceals multiple levels of interpretation.
The display is enriched by numerous educational apparatuses, multimedia insights, videos and interactive installations that enable adults and children to understand the mathematical and geometric principles behind his works, making complex concepts such as symmetry, infinity, transformation and perceptual ambiguity accessible. The exhibition not only presents his most iconic works, but also offers tools to grasp theevolution of his language toward abstraction, impossible perspectives and representations of universes that are seemingly plausible but in reality irreconcilable with physical laws, demonstrating how Escher’s art continues to this day to exert a transversal fascination, capable of attracting scholars, enthusiasts and new generations thanks to its extraordinary ability to combine logic and wonder.
The exhibition, under the patronage of the Embassy and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is sponsored by the City of Padua.
Hours: Monday from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
