From July 27 through November 2026, thirty large lobster-shaped sculptures by British artist Philip Colbert will take over Pompeii and the sites of Greater Pompeii, creating a unique dialogue between pop art and archaeology.

From July 27 through November 2026, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii will host Philip Colbert’s lobsters at the sites of “Greater Pompeii” as part of the major exhibition *Philip Colbert in Pompeii: Mythology of Pop*, curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi and organized by Il Cigno Arte.

Philip Colbert is renowned for his visual universe populated by his iconic alter ego, The Lobster, through which he reinterprets art history with an ironic, lively, and distinctly contemporary language. The exhibition features thirty large lobster-shaped sculptures, which are being displayed against the archaeological landscape of Pompeii for the first time. The event is intended to be the artist’s largest exhibition project to date, in which pop culture will engage in a dialogue with one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites.

The exhibition is not limited to the Pompeii excavations: starting July 28, the works will also be displayed at other sites managed by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, including Longola, Boscoreale, Oplontis, Villa San Marco, Villa Arianna, and the Royal Bourbon Gunpowder Factory.

“A sculpture will be installed at the protohistoric site of Longola; in this way, art helps heal the wound caused by the arson fire that struck the site a few weeks ago,” says the Park’s director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel. “It is a gesture by the artist for the local community, which will be followed, during the exhibition, by meetings with schools and associations in various locations, including Boscoreale, Castellammare di Stabia, Torre Annunziata, and Longola in the municipality of Poggiomarino.”
