Rome, Fatima Al Qadiri's Isekai exhibition at MACRO.

Through March 19, 2023, MACRO in Rome is hosting the exhibition "Isekai" by Kuwaiti artist Fatima al Qadiri.

An exhibition dedicated to Kuwaiti artist Fatima Al Qadiri (Dakar, 1981) titled Isekai is underway at MACRO - Museum of Contemporary Art until March 19, 2023. Fatima Al Qadiri is a composer and artist whose musical and material production eludes any kind of specificity or official genre definition, except for the one suggested by the title of this exhibition, “Isekai.”

Isekai is a genre of novel, film, anime, manga or video game in which the central characters are transported to a virtual universe, while the reader or audience follows the protagonists as they discover a parallel world. Deeply influenced by the narrative and immersive aspects of video games, Al Qadiri conceives and composes music that explores phenomena of cultural translation, misinterpretation or reinterpretation drawing from different eras and geographies. The exhibition presents most of Al Qadiri’s musical output, in chronological order, beginning with early releases such as Ayshay (2010), Genre-Specific Xperience (2011) and Desert Strike (2012), followed by the artist’s first album, Asiatisch, "a simulated road trip through an imaginary China " released in 2014, and ending in the present day with Medieval Femme (2021), a contemporary musical interpretation influenced by poetry written by Arab women of the Middle Ages. The repertoire also includes Al Qadiri’s recent collaborations with film directors, presenting the soundtracks for Mati Diop’s award-winning feature film, Atlantique (2019) and Paco Plaza’s La abuela (2022). Overall, the exhibition spans nine record releases and twelve years of experimentation with musical languages and the experiences that sound can generate.

Fatima Al Qadiri currently resides in Los Angeles. She has released music as a solo artist and as a member of the group Future Brown. Al Qadiri is also a founding member of the GCC collective, whose work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, the Fridericianum, the Berlin Biennale, and the Sharjah Art Foundation. In 2019 he signed the soundtrack for Atlantique, director Mati Diop’s first feature film, which won the Special Jury Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
