Soffici and Rosai. Synthetic realism and reality shots: the two artists compared in Poggio a Caiano

From October 7, 2017 to January 7, 2018, the Scuderie Medicee in Poggio a Caiano will host the exhibition "Soffici and Rosai. Synthetic Realism and Shots of Reality."

At the Scuderie Medicee in Poggio a Caiano, at the Museo Soffici e del ’900 italiano, an exhibition will be held from Oct. 7, 2017, to Jan. 7, 2018, which aims to compare the figurative languages of two great artists of the 20th century: Ardengo Soffici and Ottone Rosai.

The exhibition“Soffici and Rosai. Synthetic Realism and Shots of Reality,” curated by Luigi Cavallo and Giovanni Faccenda, with the collaboration of Oretta Nicolini, Luigi Corsetti, will present to the public twenty-six paintings and ten drawings for each of the two artists and will highlight the strong authentic understanding between the two friends, which we notice from the harmony in depicting the Tuscan landscape, but especially the different approach in representing people. For Soffici, there is a mirroring of the observed subject in its truth, we speak of a calm realism, while Rosai depicts a rich variety of characters of people familiar to him, whom he frequents, probably in the dive bars of the Oltrarno: he depicts states of mind and a society in discomfort.

Soffici’s vignettes from the Paris period, preparatory studies, and Cubofuturist compositions will also be on display. Plus: original letters, period photographs, brushes, palettes and first editions of their books, as well as the magazines Soffici and Rosai collaborated on.

The exhibition will open Saturday, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m.
