Ten years of photography exhibitions in Castelnuovo Magra: this year the village celebrates Guido Harari

Ten years after the inaugural exhibition dedicated to Elliott Erwitt, the Tower of the Castle of the Bishops of Luni in Castelnuovo Magra opens its doors to Guido Harari to celebrate the close link between music and photography.

Ten years after the inaugural exhibition dedicated to Elliott Erwitt, and after having welcomed the photography of great masters such as Letizia Battaglia, Pepi Merisio, Tano D’Amico, Vivian Maier, Bruce Chatwin, Gianni Berengo Gardin, Mario Dondero and recently Michael Yamashita, the Tower of the Castle of the Bishops of Luni in Castelnuovo Magra opens its doors to Guido Harari, one of the best-known contemporary Italian photographers.

The new exhibition project, unprecedented for Castelnuovo Magra and organized by the Municipality of Castelnuovo Magra with the support of BVLG - Banca Versilia Lunigiana e Garfagnana, pays tribute to the close link between music and photography, two expressive languages that Harari has intertwined, explored and narrated throughout his career. The exhibition is meant to be a personal and intimate tribute to his passion for image and sound.

Along the six floors of the Tower, 55 photographs are displayed, spanning decades of music history through the faces and expressions of its protagonists, such as Luciano Pavarotti, Freddie Mercury, Tina Turner, Lou Reed, Fabrizio De André, Pooh and many others.

It starts with the power of live performances and the intimacy of backstage, then enters the universe of the great male icons of music. It continues with the charismatic intensity of female muses, then meets the bands that made history, lingers on the singer-songwriters who have combined words and notes in auteur portraits, and finally arrives at shots born from unrepeatable encounters, in which the photographer’s sensitivity has given life to unique images.

The exhibition, which can be visited until Oct. 12, 2025, is presented as an immersive, exciting and evocative experience, capable of fusing art and music in a visual tale that celebrates the power of photographic language and its evocative power.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the public will also have the opportunity to participate in special “Beyond the shot, inside the music” meetings with some of the artists immortalized by Harari. These will be moments of open dialogue in which music, culture and personal stories are intertwined.

The exhibition is open in June, September and October, on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.; in July and August, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 8:30 p.m., and on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 to 8:30 p.m.
