Three new exhibitions at MAN Nuoro from November 9, 2018 to March 3, 2019: Sabir, O Youth and Beauty! and Overseas Dream.

The MAN Museum in Nuoro is offering three new exhibitions, all of which will be on view in the halls of the Sardinian museum from November 9, 2018 to March 3, 2019, and all curated by Luigi Fassi, director of MAN. The first is titled Sabir, and is an exhibition imagined by Dor Guez(Baka, 1980) that includes a collection of archival documents, two video works and a new sound installation, produced and commissioned for the occasion by MAN. The artist activates a wide-ranging reflection on the sense of belonging to a community, in relation to great history and its upheavals: raised in Israel in a family in which Christian, Arab, Jewish and Palestinian elements are intertwined, Guez belongs to a minority within a minority in the state of Israel, that of the Palestinian community of Christian faith. And it is from here that the artist offers his view of the Mediterranean, offered in the rooms of the Man Museum.

The second is entitled O Youth and Beauty! and is based on John Cheever’s short story of the same name, in which the American writer creates a representation of everyday life suspended between beauty and regret. Similarly, the works of Anna Bjerger(Skallsjö, 1973), Louis Fratino (New York, 1993) and Waldemar Zimbelmann(Agadyr, 1984), united by an intimist use of figurative painting, attempt to sketch a portrait of the cultural identity of these authors through a layering of realistic elements and fiction. Fragments of everyday life become the tool to give shape to their own experience through a painting in which the tones of diaristic sotrytelling dominate, declined in the succession of faces and glances in the foreground, interiors in charoscuro and open landscapes, waits and silences. The exhibition thus identifies in the comparison of three different figurative pictorial expressions a hypothesis of narrative, transfiguring gestures and situations into a soft, restless melancholy.

The third and final exhibition is Sogno d’oltremare (Overseas Dream), with which François- Xavier Gbré (Lille, 1978) presents a photographic selection with an African subject, documenting an exploration of the capital cities of West Africa, together with a new series of images made during his stay in Sardinia and commissioned by MAN, with the support of the Sardinia Film Commission. Viewed fromAfrica, the Sardinia that Gbré narrates is thus an elusive and elusive universe in which other cultures, other peoples and other worlds have previously cohabited.
