Works from Livorno museums come out of storage: on display at the Museum of the City of Livorno

The Museum of the City of Livorno is exhibiting more than ninety works from the deposits of Livorno's civic museums for the Magazzini Generali exhibition.

From October 29, 2021 to February 13, 2022, the Museum of the City of Livorno will exhibit works of art hidden in Livorno’s museum storerooms: in fact, there will be more than ninety masterpieces from Livorno’s civic collections that visitors will have the opportunity to admire at the Magazzini Generali exhibition. These are works and objects of art, both ancient and modern, that have remained “hidden” in museum deposits for many years.

Sponsored by the City of Livorno, the exhibition was born from an opportunity offered by the closure of the civic museums due to the pandemic: during this period, staff worked intensively behind the scenes, reviewing inventories, unwrapping works to check their state of preservation, commissioning restorations and studying the uniqueness of each piece. Out of this work came an exhibition itinerary divided into six sections: Portraits, Scenes from Livorno, The Posters, Landscapes, Still Life, and Post 1900s.
The curatorship is by the museum operators with the advice of art historian Antonella Capitanio.

The layout is also reminiscent of a depot, or “general warehouse”: the works will be placed on or near cardboard boxes on which captions and in-depth focuses will be found, while special red boxes will mark an educational path for younger children.

Hours: Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Mondays.

Tickets: Full 5 euros, reduced 3 euros for under 18 and over 65. Combined ticket with visit to the Museo Civico “G.Fattori” 7 euros.
