1563 Foundation announces five grants on the Baroque at 23,000 euros each

The 1563 Foundation in Turin is announcing five Baroque scholarships, worth 23,000 euros each, for a one-year term. Here are the details.

The Compagnia di San Paolo’s 1563 Foundation for Art and Culture’s call for grants for studies on the age and culture of the Baroque is renewed again this year. For the 2018 edition of the call, the sixth, there are five scholarships, of 23,000 euros gross each, and they will be awarded to as many young Italian and foreign scholars under 35 years of age (i.e., born after January 1, 1983). There is time until July 22 to apply.

This year’s theme is Landscape and Nature between 1680 and 1750: “A fundamental indicator for the analysis of the variation of cultural instances between the end of the seventeenth century and the middle of the eighteenth century,” reads the call for entries, “is the representation of the natural world and landscape. The seventeenth century, a century of great scientific breakthroughs and the formulation of theoretical canons of representation of the natural, developed a doctrine of the amendment of the datum of nature for the purpose of improvement. With the advancing front of modernity, in the eighteenth century, nature returns to demand space and authority with very different outcomes, in the various European centers of literary, philosophical, artistic, musical and architectural production, where the new instances variously graft, interpenetrate, dilute or break free from the sedimentations of previous traditions.”

A master’ s degree or equivalent qualification is required to participate, while a PhD is a preferential qualification. The grant covers the following subjects, which can also be covered in transdisciplinary or multidisciplinary form: social and demographic history, political history, history of economics and economic thought, history of science and technology, history of literature, history of philosophy, history of music, history of theater, history of art, history of architecture, and military history. The project will run for one year (from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019) and those who already hold another research grant or allowance or contract, those who submit non-original projects, and those who do not submit projects guided by well-founded scientific criteria will not be allowed to take part.
