Palazzo Madama (a UNESCO heritage site), in the heart of Turin, is one of Piedmont’s most representative monumental buildings. Since 1934 it has housed the ancient art collections of the Museo Civico, created in 1861, which includes more than 70,000 works dating from the early Middle Ages to the Baroque: paintings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, majolica and porcelain, gold and silver, furniture and textiles. Masterpieces such as Antonello da Messina’s Portrait of a Man, Orazio Gentileschi’sAssumption, the Très belles Heures de Notre Dame de Jean de Berry, the only manuscript in the world with miniatures by Jan Van Eyck, a rich collection of 15th-century and Piedmontese Renaissance with masterpieces by Giacomo Jaquerio, Macrino d’Alba, Giovanni Martino Spanzotti, Defendente Ferrari and many others. On the second floor of the museum are the Decorative Arts with one of the richest collections in Europe-the Medici Vase, Meissen masterpieces, and important collections of textiles, gilt glass, and ivories.

The new director, in addition to the task of providing for the study, care, management, and enhancement of the museum’s permanent collections, is called upon to strengthen the relationship between the museum and its public with attention to the issue of cultural accessibility, promote initiatives, activities, and implement a program of temporary exhibitions aimed at both increasing attendance and reaching new audiences, ensuring both scientific accuracy and a popular approach. He or she will also have to strengthen the museum’s relationship with the territory and the city of Turin, with national and international museums and institutions, both in terms of exhibition activities and scientific research, as well as increase fundraising activities and develop new ways of digital enjoyment of the museum and its artistic heritage.

The term of office will be full-time and will last four years (extendable by one), with economic and normative treatment commensurate with professional experience. Among the requirements: a master’s degree, high-level scientific skills in history, art history, archaeology, decorative arts and architecture, cultural heritage, with particular reference to the arts and historical periods of the museum’s collections, also proven by experience in curating exhibitions and temporary exhibitions or prestigious scientific assignments in the field, and also proven leadership skills and experience in human resources management, experience in public-private collaboration, knowledge of digitization processes of museum activities.
