Lorenzo Balbi has been reappointed director of MAMbo in Bologna and head of the Modern and Contemporary Art Area of Istituzione Bologna Musei until 2026.

Lorenzo Balbi will be director of MAMbo in Bologna and head of the Modern and Contemporary Art Area of Istituzione Bologna Musei until 2026. Balbi first took on the role of artistic director of MAMbo and head of the civic museums pertaining to the Modern and Contemporary Art Area last July 3, 2017, and now, following the public selection procedure for the recruitment, with a fixed-term employment contract, of a highly specialized figure for the position of Head of the disciplinary area “Modern and Contemporary Art” of Istituzione Bologna Musei, announced by the Municipality of Bologna on February 22, 2022, he has been reappointed. The employment contract will last until September 30, 2026.

Lorenzo Balbi (Turin, 1982) has been director of MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna since 2017, when he assumed the role of Head of the Modern and Contemporary Art Area of Istituzione Bologna Musei, to which, in addition to MAMbo, Villa delle Rose, Museo Morandi, Casa Morandi, Museo per la Memoria di Ustica and Sandra Natali Artist Residence belong. After studying Conservation of Cultural Heritage at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, she specialized in Contemporary Art at the University of Turin. From 2006 to 2017, at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, he taught Curatorial Methodology at Campo, a course for curators, and was in charge of the organization and development of exhibition projects in the spaces of Turin and Guarene d’Alba, as well as exhibition reviews of the Sandretto Re Re Rebaudengo Collection abroad. He curated the Residency Project for Young Foreign Curators from 2015 to 2017. Since 2018, he has been the artistic director of ART CITY Bologna, a review of exhibition events promoted on the occasion of Arte Fiera. He has given lectures and seminars at DAMS - University of Bologna, Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, IED (Florence), Modena Visual Arts Foundation. He is a member of the board of directors of AMACI - Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums, of the board of the Forum of Italian Contemporary Art, of the scientific committee of the Pinacoteca Nazionale of Bologna, of the scientific committee of the Master of Art of the Luiss Business School (Rome), and of the board of directors of the Lucio Saffaro Foundation. His texts and articles have been published in several journals, including in our newspaper.

“The confirmation of Lorenzo Balbi as head of Mambo until the end of the term, after selections held in recent weeks, is excellent news,” said Bologna Mayor Matteo Lepore. "After the work he has done in recent years, I am convinced that, thanks to his established experience, he will continue to produce revitalized projects on the art scene in Bologna. Continuing the focus on the contemporary in its many branches: from exhibition activities to residencies, from didactics to projects. Right away we have two important challenges ahead of us after the pandemic years, Art city and Arte fiera, and a challenge that will characterize the entire mandate: the strengthening of our museum system as a whole."
