Over 20 million euros to protect and enhance one of Italy’s most important monumental complexes: the Royal Palace of Caserta is opening its doors to patronage and seeking sponsors through a public call for proposals dedicated to supporting its historical, artistic, and landscape heritage. The goal is to strengthen collaboration between public institutions and private entities, utilizing the simplified procedures provided for in the Public Contracts Code to secure financial resources and technical support. The contributions will be used to improve the conservation of the Vanvitelli complex, the quality of services, and visitor conditions, thereby promoting the sustainable management of a heritage site of exceptional value.

With a total area of over 1,330,000 square meters, including both interior and exterior spaces, and more than one million visitors per year, the Royal Palace of Caserta requires constant maintenance, restoration, and infrastructure upgrades. The available public funds are insufficient to cover all the needs of such a vast complex, making it essential to seek additional forms of support and patronage.

The 17 Projects to Enhance the Royal Palace, Park, and Carolino Aqueduct

The identified projects include restoration work, lighting improvements, upgrades to building systems, and initiatives dedicated to the maintenance of green spaces and safety. The program involves various areas of the monumental complex, with investments of varying sizes based on conservation and enhancement needs.

The planned interventions inside the Royal Palace include six projects, with a particular focus on the comfort of the spaces, architectural enhancement, and the conservation of historic furnishings. The most significant project in financial terms concerns the installation of air conditioning in the Royal Apartments, for which 15,300,000 euros have been allocated. Next arethe lighting of the Royal Palace’s Cannocchiale, with an investment of 1,338,317 euros; that of the Third Courtyard, for 743,919.07 euros; and that of the Palatine Chapel, for 492,125.57 euros. The program also includes the restoration and refurbishment of the historic 18th- and 19th-century clocks housed in the Royal Apartments, at a cost of 90,000 euros, and the restoration of a series of historic armchairs and sofas, with an investment of 70,000 euros.

In the Royal Park, three projects are planned to restore the historic landscape and preserve the architectural structures. The largest project involves the restoration of the ancient citrus grove in the Giardino della Flora, for which 976,000 euros have been allocated. Also planned are the restoration, stabilization, and renovation of the Ponte di Ercole, with an investment of 65,596.35 euros, and work to clad the exterior staircase of the former Passionist Convent, at a cost of 155,250 euros. The restoration of the citrus grove aims to restore value to a historic part of the garden, while the other projects will contribute to the preservation of the structures and the enhancement of the park’s spaces.

Forthe Carolino Aqueduct, a €380,000 project is planned for the restoration of the Casina dei Ponti della Valle. The project aims to highlight an architectural element linked to the historical and infrastructural system associated with the Royal Palace, contributing to the protection of a heritage that extends beyond the Royal Palace and its park.

Seven projects involve Piazza Carlo di Borbone, the area in front of the Royal Palace, with the goal of improving its appearance, functionality, and public accessibility. The work includes the maintenance and upkeep of green spaces, at a cost of 90,000 euros, and cleaning and beautification of the areas, at a cost of 80,000 euros. An additional 90,000 euros is allocated for street furniture, the same amount for lighting, and 90,000 euros for paving and surfaces. The program is rounded out by work on systems and infrastructure, at a cost of 80,000 euros, and safety prevention and support activities, at a cost of 70,000 euros. The plan thus includes both projects dedicated to the square’s aesthetic appearance and measures aimed at improving its organization, maintenance, and safety, for the benefit of visitors and the community.

With this public notice, the Royal Palace of Caserta aims to engage businesses, organizations, and other stakeholders in the protection and enhancement of the monumental complex. Financial and technical support from the private sector can contribute to the implementation of the identified projects, strengthening public-private collaboration and fostering new resources for the preservation of cultural heritage.
