Velia archaeological site, inaugurated free shuttle service to improve connections

The Velia Archaeological Area (Salerno), which has always been difficult to reach, is improving its accessibility considerably by establishing a free shuttle service from Ascea station. So far active only for one month, on Wednesdays.

One of the main problems of theVelia Archaeological Area (not far from the more famous Paestum) has always been its accessibility. If, in fact, the Park of Paestum (on which the Park of Velia also depends administratively) is located a short distance from the state highway Tirrena Inferiore and about seven hundred meters from the train station, the Park of Velia does not enjoy equally favorable connections. To improve them, the Paestum-Velia Park has therefore decided to establish a free shuttle service, in collaboration with the Municipality of Ascea, to connect the coastal strip to the archaeological site.

For now, it can be thought of as a sort of experiment, since the service will remain in operation only on Wednesdays in August and the first Wednesday in September, with a single run per day: departure from Ascea station at 5:30 p.m. and scheduled arrival at 6 p.m., in time to see the Park in the last hour and a half of its opening. The free shuttle will depart will retrieve tourists at special stops near the hotels hosting them. Also in Velia, the group will be able to take advantage of a guided tour service offered by the municipality, while games and workshops to discover the secrets of ancient Elea are planned for the children.

Welcoming the first group of visitors yesterday was the director of the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia, Tiziana D’Angelo. “We are extremely pleased with this new collaboration between the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia, the municipality and the Pro Loco of Ascea,” she said. “This is an important service that expands the use of the archaeological site of Velia and integrates its enhancement with that of Ascea Marina. It is also an opportunity to share our heritage research and care activities with the most lively and sensitive economic realities of the area. This initiative is part of a broader plan to improve mobility and connections between the Park and the territory, which has seen in recent days the inauguration of a free transportation service between the sites of Paestum and Velia.”

“We want to bring citizens and guests closer and closer to the archaeological site of Velia,” says Ascea Mayor Pietro D’Angiolillo. “We are very happy to collaborate with the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia and the Pro Loco to improve the enjoyment of our site.”
