Thanks to the donation of a Cortonese patron who has chosen to remain anonymous, it will be possible to restore Beato Angelico ’s lunette from the pediment of the church of San Domenico in Cortona. This lunette and theAnnunciation housed in the Museo Diocesano represent the only two works in Cortona by the celebrated painter active in the first half of the 15th century. The lunette depicts the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Dominic, along with the evangelists, and dates from around 1434. It was removed from its placement above the portal of San Domenico a month ago and is now being restored by Luciana Bernardini and Beatrice Cenci, under the direction of the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage.
“We have to thank this benefactor,” said Culture Councilor Attesti. “Even his choice to remain anonymous makes his action even more significant, oriented only to the common good. An action that will benefit the artistic and cultural heritage of our city and that we will enhance in collaboration with all those involved.”
“The work has been cleaned and we have carried out consolidation work in two places where the old stucco had blown off, the plastering has been redone, and now we are in the phase of the pictorial retouching,” the restorers explained. “It is a job that reintegrates what other restorers have done previously. We expect to complete the work in the next 30 days.”
The work also includes a solution for weatherproofing, new lighting, and new glass, with the arrival of a transparent, protective museum-like surface that will provide better viewing.
