Eike Schmidt confirmed as president of the Worship Buildings Fund

By decree of Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese, Uffizi Director Eike Schmidt was confirmed as president of the Fondo Edifici di Culto, the state agency that administers publicly owned churches.

Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese today issued a decree renewing the board of directors of the Fund for Buildings of Worship (FEC), the state agency that administers publicly owned churches. The director of the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, Eike Schmidt, was reappointed as president of the FEC: he will hold the position for an additional four years along with the current members who were all reappointed: Biancamaria D’Agostino and Pietro Di Natale, designated by the Minister of the Interior; Lucia Foti, designated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility; Esmeralda Valente, designated by the Ministry of Culture; and Don Renato Tarantelli Baccari, Andrea Bettetini and Marcello Volpe, designated by the Italian Bishops’ Conference.

As required by law, members of the board can only be appointed for two consecutive terms (Art. 26 of DpR Jan. 13, 1987 No. 33). The previous collegial body had ended its term last August 9.

“It is a great honor and responsibility to serve the state in this role, precisely at a crucial time like this,” says Eike Schmidt. “In fact, the Pnrr offers the opportunity to use more than 500 million euros to secure the priceless historical, artistic, religious and cultural heritage of the more than 800 churches cared for by the Worship Buildings Fund. I will continue to work and carry out my duties as I have done over the years, with the greatest possible commitment and dedication.”
