In Ferrara discovered the base of the ancient northern entrance to the Este Castle

Excavations carried out in front of the Este Castle uncovered the base of the ancient northern entrance to the castle before the 16th-century renovation, as well as new historical elements.

During excavations, carried out under the guidance of the archaeologist in charge of Ferrara’s protection, Chiara Guarnieri, for repaving work in the area in front of Ferrara Castle, new historical elements have emerged: the base of the ravelin of the castle has been discovered in its entirety. The ravelin constitutes an element of the fortification detached from the city walls and placed in an advanced position, identifiable with the northern entrance of the Castello Estense, before the 16th-century reconstruction.

This discovery, as Guarnieri says, joins a number of additional elements that have emerged in recent days. In particular, excavations are uncovering clues traceable to an entire sequence of houses, perhaps workshops, that historically faced the opposite side of the fortress. “The historical reconstruction is of greater complexity in the current semi-carriageway road on which the construction site is located,” the archaeologist explains. “If in fact initially the work involved an area still pertaining to the castle, in the current side of the excavation there are the remains of dwellings that stood opposite, which outline a more articulated picture, from which the outlines of dwellings emerge and from which the perimeters of a courtyard also seem to resurface, of exact date to be established.”

“The excavation activity,” comments Mayor Alan Fabbri, “allows us to acquire new elements of Ferrara’s history, to deepen the historical-stratigraphic aspect of the city. After several decades since the last works, the current repaving is also an opportunity to trace new signs of the past.”

Thus, studies and research on dating and a probable ancient neighborhood are underway.
