Marina Abramović and Sean Kelly in collaboration with photographer Marco Anelli, leading online art marketplace Artsy, and Baobab Frames are organizing acharity auction in support of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. All proceeds will go to Direct Relief.

The two-lot auction will offer a unique opportunity to be photographed sitting across from the performance artist at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York on Saturday, April 16, on the last day of Performative, the ongoing exhibition dedicated to Abramović at the gallery. On this day, the historic 2010 performance at MoMA in which the artist sat silently in a chair for eight hours a day, for nearly three months, for a total of 716 1/2 hours, while museum visitors took turns to sit across from her, will be reenacted. At the Sean Kelly Gallery, Abramović and the winners will sit on two chairs in the center of The Artist is Present installation, a six-screen film documenting, in real time, her 2010 performance. Each winner will be photographed with the artist by photographer Marco Anelli and will receive a framed copy of the photograph signed by both Abramović and Anelli. They will also receive a signed copy of Anelli’s 2021 publication, Portraits in the Presence of Marina Abramović, which includes portraits of all 1545 participants in the MoMA performance.

Theonline auction, hosted by Artsy, will begin on March 17 and end on March 25.

In a viral video released by Abramović on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the artist said, “Full solidarity for the Ukrainian people. An attack on Ukraine is an attack on all of us. It is an attack on ’humanity and must be stopped.”

Sean Kelly commented, "We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and are deeply concerned about Putin’s invasion and the unspeakable suffering it has unleashed on the Ukrainian people. Marina has worked in Ukraine and has many ties to the area. We condemn this act of aggression and support Direct Relief’s humanitarian efforts. We are honored to partner with Marina, Marco Anelli, Artsy and Baobab Frames to raise funds to support the Ukrainian people."
