Mexico, ruins of a large 1,000-year-old Mayan palace discovered

The ruins of a 1,000-year-old Mayan palace have been discovered in Mexico.

Important archaeological discovery in Mexico, at the site of Kulubá (in the Yucatán Peninsula, not far from the city of Cancún), where a mission from the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) has uncovered the ruins of a Maya palace 55 meters long, 15 meters wide and 6 meters high. According to the institute’s experts, the palace would have been built in two phases, the first dating back to the late Classic period of the Maya civilization (600-900 A.D.) and the second to the first centuries of the Postclassic period (850-1050 A.D.). Of the palace, the foundations, stairs, some walls, pillars have been found. During the Postclassic period, the city of Chichén Itzá, a kind of “metropolis” of Maya civilization, made its influence felt on sites such as Kulubá, which became almost enclaves of the great center.

“This discovery is just the beginning,” said archaeologist Alfredo Barrera Rubio of INAH. “We have just begun to unveil one of the largest structures at this site.” In addition to the palace, Mexican archaeologists are in fact working on four other structures in the area known as “Group C” in the central plaza of the Kulubá site: there is an altar, the remains of two residential buildings, and a round building that probably housed an oven.

In addition, experts are also currently considering a reforestation of the area: the action is to protect the Kulubá ruins from the strong winds that blow in this area of Mexico and the action of the sun.
