Declared to be of historical interest by the Ministry of Culture, the Franca Valeri Fund, which includes photographs, scripts, letters, drawings and sketches, playbills, honors, and more, and which covers the entire chronological span of Franca Valeri’s professional activity of Franca Valeri from 1947 to 2019, was donated by her in 2019 to theAccademia dei Filodrammatici of Milan, of which she was a member for sixty years and an honorary member, and can now be consulted online at http: //fondovaleri.accademiadeifilodrammatici.it/fondo.php

“It is a relationship that knows no interruption that between Franca Valeri and the Accademia dei Filodrammatici,” stresses Antonia Chiodi, president of the Accademia dei Filodrammatici. In March 2019 Franca Valeri was appointed by the Academy Council as an ’honorary member’ a highly prestigious position that has been awarded over time to other selected personalities of Italian culture and politics. She then wished to give the Academy a final gift, namely her entire personal archive, which chronicles over seventy years of her profession. “It is therefore a great honor for us,” Antonia Chiodi continued, “to preserve and manage this extraordinary and unique patrimony, which is already available to those who wish to consult it and which makes it possible as of now to get to know its contents through the Academy’s website. This is only the first step of a path that, through various initiatives, will make known and appreciated also to future generations the exceptional talent of Franca Valeri, universal heritage of Milanese and Italian culture.”

The material, catalogued and rearranged by Lucia M. Fagnoni, consists of more than 2,200 stage, personal and other photographs, hundreds of scripts of plays, films, radio and television broadcasts, 19 large-format playbills and others of various sizes, 26 sketches of stage dresses and hairstyle sketches, 72 drawings and three albums, 9 scores, 50 letters received and sent by Franca Valeri and her father Luigi Norsa, and also 26 honors and diplomas and miscellaneous material.

The interest of the documentation and the considerable artistic importance of Franca Valeri received the attention and support of the Superintendence of Archival Assets of the Lombardy Region; it was therefore decided to make the Fund accessible to all researchers, physically, at the Academy’s headquarters in Via Filodrammatici in Milan.

The archive can also now be consulted online; the dedicated section of the website offers the possibility to read descriptions of all materials and to see a wide selection of photographs and reproductions of the most important documents, as well as a methodological description of how the Fund was ordered.
