The expanded and refurbished MoMA has reopened to the public after four months with many new features

New York's MoMA again open to the public starting Oct. 21, 2019, after a four-month closure for expansion and refurbishment.

MoMA - New York ’s Museum of Modern Art has reopened its doors after a four-month closure for refurbishment and expansion work. The famous museum of modern and contemporary art in the Big Apple has been open to the public again since Monday, October 21, 2019, and there are not a few new features.

The exhibition space has been expanded by 30 percent thanks to a project by the architectural firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler; the permanent collection has also been enriched with the introduction of works celebrating African American, Hispanic, and Asian art for “a more global vision of art that goes beyond strictly Western canons,” as Roxana Marcoci, one of the curators, puts it. On the occasion of the reopening, new works were commissioned from artists such as Yoko Ono, Philippe Parreno, Goshka Macuba, and Kerstin Braetsch.

In addition for the purpose of continuous renovation of the museum, there will be periodic rearrangements, approximately every six months, and increased rotation of temporary exhibitions.
In addition to the structural expansion, the new MoMA is the effect of rethinking the space as a shared art experience between the museum and the public. The entire collection has been rearranged with the aim of sharing broader visions of contemporary art.

In addition, the new space at the Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Studio will be used for live performances to enter directly into the artists’ immersive works through installations, sounds, and more. One example is composer David Tudor’s Rainforest V (variation 1): a sound installation made with everyday objects suspended in space to increase their resonance.

The Paula and James Crown Creativity Lab, on the other hand, is proposed as a new and experimental space dedicated to the ideas and artistic processes that arise from the museum’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Visitors are thus invited to participate in conversations, meet the artists, but also find suggestions for a “tailor-made” visit to the museum and, why not, relax surrounded by art.

Also renovated are the bookshop spaces and modified visiting hours: every Friday and the first Thursday of every month the museum will remain open until 9 p.m.
