UNESCO World Heritage Site, new candidates for Italy: Scrovegni Chapel and Prosecco Hills

Italy submits two new candidates for UNESCO World Heritage status: the Scrovegni Chapel and the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.

The Italian National Commission for UNESCO has two new candidates to send to Paris to have them attempt to becomeUNESCO World Heritage Sites: they are the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua and the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. In the first case it is a totally new candidacy, proposed for the 2019-2020 Unesco evaluation cycle. In the case of the Prosecco Hills, on the other hand, it is a new attempt after the World Heritage Committee had rejected the site in August 2018, while still sending Italy some recommendations in order to improve the candidacy dossier, which will therefore be resubmitted for 2019.

There are also two other candidacies in which Italy is presenting itself along with other countries: the first is the Great Spas of Europe, a candidacy that has the Czech Republic as the lead country, and which presents sites from Italy (which is proposing only the city of Montecatini Terme), Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom. The second, on the other hand, is the Mediterranean Alps, in which Italy is the lead country, and is presented along with France and Monaco.

The work of the Governing Council of the National Commission also resulted in the proposal to withdraw the candidacy of Sila Forest Ecosystems, as it has already received negative opinions from the competent evaluation body within UNESCO (in fact, it should be remembered that the area, since 2014, is already included in the list of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves). Finally, the Governing Council let it be known that a possible candidacy of the Via Francigena in Italy will be evaluated soon.

Italy is thus in the running for four new World Heritage Sites: at the moment there are 54 already included.
