Herculaneum's Suburban Baths reopen extraordinarily with tours by reservation only

Extraordinary visits to Herculaneum's Suburban Baths are back: the public will have the opportunity to visit an area normally closed to the public for three Saturdays in November and access the restoration site.

Extraordinary visits to Herculaneum’s Suburban Baths, one of the most striking and best-preserved sites in the Roman world, are back. After the great success of the previous opening, the public will again have the opportunity to access the restoration site and visit an area normally closed to the public. Visits will take place on the three Saturdays of November 15, 22 and 29, 2025, with two shifts scheduled for each day, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 to 12:30 p.m., for a maximum of ten participants per group.

Located between the city walls and the ancient seashore, the Suburban Baths represent the best-preserved Roman bath complex in the world. They originally constituted the private bath of the Nonii Balbi family, among the most influential in Herculaneum, and were later opened for public use. The site still preserves fine marble floors, refined stucco and painting decorations, the very rare original wooden doors and an innovative “samovar” heating system for the hot pools, unique in the world for its state of preservation. These extraordinary elements testify to the wealth, aesthetic taste and prestige of Herculaneum society, as well as revealing the centrality that the Romans attached to body care and social life.

The extraordinary opening is made possible thanks to a major restoration and enhancement project, financed entirely with state public funds and carried out in collaboration with the Packard Humanities Institute, which has been working alongside the Herculaneum Archaeological Park for nearly twenty-five years in its protection, conservation and research activities. This initiative offers the public an opportunity to discover the extraordinary architecture and decorations of the bath complex and, at the same time, to take a close look at the delicate restoration operations still underway.

Visits are available by reservation only and involve an integrated ticket of 20 euros, including entrance to the Park and a visit to the Suburban Baths. All proceeds will go to support the restoration work at the Herculaneum Archaeological Park. The free admission fees provided by current regulations remain valid for this initiative as well.
