Roman hypogeum mausoleum emerges in Quarto (Naples) during construction work

During the construction of a production building in Quarto (Naples), the ABAP Superintendency of Naples reports the discovery of a Roman hypogeum mausoleum. The excavation, begun in the area already known for tombs and funerary enclosures, is still ongoing.

During the construction of a property with a productive character in Quarto, in the province of Naples, archaeological remains of considerable interest have emerged : an underground mausoleum dating back to Roman times. The discovery was made known by the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Naples Metropolitan Area, which is monitoring the area, already known for the presence of tombs and funerary enclosures since the subdivision carried out about 20 years ago.

The mausoleum, whose investigations are still underway, has typical features of Roman funerary structures. Access is via an entrance avenue (dromos) consisting of a staircase that leads directly to the main chamber. Inside, a series of rooms arranged at floor level are developed, functional for the funerary practices of the time. Particular attention was drawn to the floor covering made of hydraulic earthenware, a material commonly used in ancient floors because of its impermeability and durability. Excavation operations continue, and the opening of access to the burial chamber is expected to reveal further details useful for understanding the structure and the historical context in which it was built. Indeed, experts from the Superintendency have stressed the importance of the site for the contribution it can make to our knowledge of the type of burials in the area and the organization of funerary spaces during the Roman period.
