The first solo exhibition in an Italian museum by French artist JR will be held in Turin.

Starting in February 2023, the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin will host the first solo exhibition in an Italian museum by French artist JR, who is world-famous for his projects combining photography and street art.

The appointment is for February 2023 at the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin: there, in the new Intesa Sanpaolo museum that opened in mid-May in the rooms of Palazzo Turinetti, the first solo exhibition in an Italian museum will be held by JR, the French artist born in 1983 whose name is not yet known, but who has become known worldwide for his projects that combine photography and street-art with great visual impact. So, after taking his work to several museums (his last solo show was held between November 2021 and June 2022 at the Groninger Museum in Groningen, Netherlands, and in the past his solo shows have been organized by gallery owners Perrotin and Saatchi, as well as several museums such as the Brooklyn Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art). In Italy, however, he had already been seen between 2020 and 2021 at the Galleria Continua in San Gimignano for his first solo show in Italy. The one in Turin is instead the first Italian exhibition inside a museum.

The Parisian artist will propose for Intesa Sanpaolo’s Gallerie d’Italia - Turin an original commission that will unite center and periphery, responding to the goal of using art as a tool to change the world. Combining different expressive languages, JR will bring to the exhibition, curated by Arturo Galansino, his touch to narrate reality and stimulate reflections on social fragilities. This is not the first time JR has come to Italy: in addition to Galleria Continua, he has already been seen in action at Palazzo Strozzi and Palazzo Farnese, and in both cases he had “broken through” the facades of the two historic buildings. Now, however, it will be a larger project, a solo show in an Italian museum, which comes after the artist has exhibited in museums and galleries halfway around the world.

“I am very happy to announce that in February 2023 I will have my first solo exhibition in an Italian museum, at the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin with new works created for the occasion,” JR said in a video posted on his social channels. “I visited the construction site of the new museum being fascinated by the potential of this space and I can’t wait to be able to exhibit my new project here for the first time ever.”

Intesa Sanpaolo’s Gallerie d’Italia in Turin, opening in May 2022 and led by Michele Coppola-Executive Director Arte Cultura e Beni Storici, aims to be a permanent laboratory where photography and visual arts explore the complexity today with multidisciplinary looks, focusing in particular on the evolution of environmental, social and economic sustainability issues that interpret the Bank’s commitment to ESG (Environment, Social and Governance), in line with the 17 SDGs of the 2030 Agenda.
