A documentary on Frida Kahlo filmed at Casa Azul is coming to theaters.

Coming to theaters Nov. 22, 23 and 24 is a documentary on Frida Kahlo, signed by director Ali Ray, and filmed almost entirely at Casa Azul, the painter's famous home just outside Mexico City.

A documentary on Frida Kahlo arrives in theaters on Nov. 22, 23 and 24, marking the big-screen debut of the Art Icons series, a series of documentary films on the undisputed icons of the art world, which thanks to Adler Entertainment will arrive in theaters with three event films dedicated to three illustrious personalities of the art scene. Director Ali Ray ’s documentary Frida Kahlo investigates the life and artistic production of the celebrated Mexican artist, and was made entirely in the famous Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s home in Coyoacán, a suburb of Mexico City.

Created in collaboration with world-renowned experts who knew Frida Kahlo personally, along with those who studied and curated her work, the film shows a combination of interviews, commentary and a detailed exploration of her art. “A journey through the life of a true global icon,” reads the synopsis, “discovering her art and the truth behind her often turbulent life,” “digging deeper than any film has ever done before, with the support of world-renowned experts and exploring the grandeur of this artist, discovering the real Frida Kahlo.”

“Directing this film,” says director Ali Ray, “totally changed my view of Frida Kahlo as an artist. Before, I had not paid much attention to her, feeling a bit put off by the omnipresence of her image as an icon on the covers of pillows and T-shirts. Now, having studied her works more closely and understanding their context of time and place, I am completely fascinated. Having access to his personal letters was a key part of making the film and in my understanding of his work. It allowed me to see how the fragility and insecurities revealed in her letters were processed through the act of painting. His meticulously painted canvases were his way of interpreting the world, his politics, his passions and emotions, transforming them into images of strength, defiance and understanding.”

“When Ali proposed that I go with her to shoot in Mexico,” says producer Phil Grabsky, “I admit I hesitated after such a busy year, but who could have turned down the chance to spend time with those who knew Frida Kahlo? When the Covid is over (always optimistically), I recommend a visit. The places, the people, the history, the music, the food and, yes, the tequila, are wonderful. The people we interviewed were knowledgeable and very eloquent, the places were evocative and revealing, and seeing Kahlo’s work up close was moving and inspiring. Kahlo is an artist we’ve all heard of, but don’t know well enough; works of art we may have glanced at, but never considered; a biography we may not have had time to understand, but can now try to understand and appreciate.”
