A new chapter is added to the Aurelia→SUD project, an initiative dedicated tocontemporary art that finds space along the Via Aurelia Sud in the territory of Arcola (La Spezia). The protagonist of the new intervention is Vittorio Corsini (Cecina, 1956), who presents the work Stare qui, conceived specifically for the exhibition device conceived by Gabriele Landi, artist and curator of the event. Aurelia→SUD is configured as an atypical project in the panorama of contemporary art practices: in fact, it is neither a gallery nor a traditional exhibition space or ascribable to the map of off spaces, but rather a material and at the same time diffuse place that intercepts the daily passage of those who cross the street. The heart of the project is a light box measuring 355 by 67 centimeters, installed at No. 19 Via Aurelia Sud, which can be seen continuously 24 hours a day. An essential and direct format, designed to meet an often fleeting gaze, that of passersby or motorists.
The initiative, launched on September 12, 2021 with an initial intervention by Mario Consiglio, has over time involved a plurality of artists called to confront this device and its specificities. Among the names that have followed are Loredana Longo, Luca Pancrazzi, Serena Fineschi, Iginio De Luca, Luca Quartana, Luca Scarabelli, Fausto Gilberti, Gino D’Ugo, Armida Gandini, Marco Neri, Gianni Asdrubali, and Daniele Bacci. Each intervention is made ad hoc and remains visible for a period of two months, with no inauguration or formal closing moments.
With Stare qui, installed last March 30, Vittorio Corsini proposes a work that stems from a personal and biographical coincidence. As he recounts in his dialogue with Gabriele Landi, Via Aurelia Sud is also the address (in another city) where he was born and raised. From this element begins the reflection that led to the creation of the work, conceived as a writing linked to the present and the dimension of being, without the intention of constructing an argumentative discourse.
The calligraphic component takes a central role in the work. Corsini emphasizes how calligraphy represents for him a sign deeply linked to the person, a form of revelation. Throughout his artistic practice he has often used writing by asking others to trace sentences, while in this case the handwriting is his own, made in watercolor. A choice that accentuates the personal dimension of the gesture and strengthens the link between sign and identity, between writing and presence.
The intervention fits fully into the logic of the Aurelia→SUD project, which questions the idea of privileged exhibition space. The work is exposed to a gaze that is not necessarily conscious, that of someone who intercepts it for a few moments, perhaps from a moving car. A condition that, according to Corsini, does not weaken the strength of art, but exposes it to a different mode of approach. As he declares, “I believe that art can work and pass through completely different spaces, there are no privileged spaces and an instant can be enough to change a life. Of course it will not be so complex reading done in the car but a question can always arise.”
The project conceived by Gabriele Landi finds its own space for in-depth discussion and communication on the Facebook page “Parola d’Artista,” where each intervention is accompanied by a brief conversation between the curator and the artists involved. A digital extension that complements the physical dimension of the light box, expanding the possibilities of access and interpretation of the works.
