"Extraordinary": the cloud-inspired installation Elica brings to Design Week

An installation inspired by the lightness of clouds: it's called Extraordinary, is created by the Japanese duo we+, and is brought to Milan Design Week by Elica in collaboration with the Fondazione Ermanno Casoli in Rome.

A large design installation inspired by the lightness of clouds will animate the courtyard of Palazzo Litta in Milan during Design Week 2024, from Monday, April 15 to Sunday, April 21, 2024. It is entitled Extraordinary and was conceived by the Japanese studio we+, founded in 2013 by Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando. The installation is curated by Marcello Smarrelli, artistic director of the Fondazione Ermanno Casoli, and is made in collaboration with Elica.

Elica, an Italian company at the forefront of cooking appliance manufacturing, has been a world leader in kitchen extraction systems for more than 50 years. It has always been characterized by its propensity for experiment andpioneering approach to design: a characteristic that manifests itself through the integration of innovative technologies and typically Italian creativity.

The work that Elica is now presenting in Milan is inspired by clouds, creating a continuous flow through a variety of shades that recall air and warmth, natural elements that are deeply identifying for Elica.

Following this inclination to challenge normality, Elica therefore returns to the Fuorisalone with a special project, an initiative realized in collaboration with Fondazione Ermanno Casoli, which is constantly engaged in promoting dialogue between business and contemporary art. It is a story that aims to express the inventiveness that characterizes Elica’s philosophy, presented in one of the most interesting places in Milan, the courtyard of Palazzo Litta, a superb example of the Lombard baroque located in the heart of the cultural district of the 5 streets.

The space is large and the interaction with the work is intimate. The use of materials, the flexibility of forms and space, and the lightness and dynamism of the elements are meant to celebrate the genius, precision, dedication, and craftsmanship of Elica’s creations.

“We were inspired by the natural elements, the location and the Extraordinary concept to create an installation where nature, beauty and color come together to offer the public a sensory journey centered on the theme of air. The essence of the brand prompted us to seek an authentic interpretation perspective of its values,” say artists Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando. “The relationship and contact with forms, materials, hues and depth transport the visitor into a unique dimension of connection with the element.”
