On Thursday, May 21 at 2 p.m., theAcademy of Fine Arts of Bologna will host, at the Aula Magna, the fourth edition of the event Quel pomeriggio di un giorno da Tuono, an event dedicated to the figure of cartoonist and illustrator Tuono Pettinato. The initiative is part of an in-depth study of his work and cultural legacy, with a focus on his contribution in the field of contemporary comics and education.
Tuono Pettinato has been a central and at the same time lateral figure in the recent Italian comics scene. His work has developed crossing both the sphere of self-publishing and mainstream publishing, maintaining a language recognizable for balance between pop dimension and research. His production has been characterized by an ironic and at the same time analytical approach, capable of observing the present and its contradictions, as well as episodes and characters from recent and past history. For these reasons, he was called to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna since the start of the Biennium Specialization in Comic Languages, where he taught the course of Humorous Comics for about ten years, until his death in 2021.
The meeting will be attended by colleagues, friends and admirers of the author. Attendees include Enrico Fornaroli, director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna; Emilio Varrà, Gianluca Costantini and Andrea Bruno, professors at the institution; Alessio Trabacchini, critic; Eugenia Erba, winner of the Tuono Pettinato 2024 Fellowship; Roberto Natalini, director of theCNR Institute for Applications of Computing, Francesca Riccioni, author and doctoral student of the “Augusto Righi” Department of Physics and Astronomy, Lia Remorini, mother of the artist and president of the Foundation dedicated to him, Guido Siliotto, lawyer, journalist and board member of the Tuono Pettinato Foundation, and Anna Matilde Sali of Eris Edizioni.
This year’s edition is dedicated in particular to Tuono Pettinato’s science popularization activity, considered one of the most relevant and original components of his path. Among the works mentioned is Enigma. The Strange Life of Alan Turing, a comic book biography that interweaves scientific content and the human dimension of the protagonist. The planned talks are intended to highlight the role of comics as a tool for popularization, highlighting the author’s ability to combine pop culture languages and scientific knowledge in an accessible and structured form.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Vincenza Riccardi Scassellati Library of the Bologna Academy, will also be the occasion for the presentation of Eugenia Erba’s graphic novel Squame, winner of the scholarship supported by the Tuono Pettinato Foundation and aimed at graduates of the Academy. The volume is published by Eris Edizioni. During the meeting, the winner or winner of the fourth edition of the scholarship, which provides a cash prize of 2,000 euros intended to support the production of comic books capable of offering a critical reading of the present, will also be announced.
