A series of meetings in Florence to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death and the birth of Cosimo de' Medici

The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore is offering a series of meetings to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci and the birth of Cosimo I de' Medici.

On the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci and the birth of Cosimo I de’ Medici, theOpera di Santa Maria del Fiore is offering a series of meetings, curated by Antonio Natali and Sergio Givone, entitled Humanism and Modern Manner. Ten lectures, the first of which will be held on January 15 at 5 p.m. by Luca Bagnoli, who will talk about La fabbriceria di Santa Maria del Fiore tra storia, diritto e azienda.

2019 marks two important 500th anniversaries in the history of Florence: the death of Leonardo da Vinci and the birth of Cosimo I de’ Medici. The two events date to the late spring of 1519. On May 2 Leonardo died in Amboise and on June 12 Cosimo was born in Florence. “For Leonardo (of whom it is easy to foreshadow the rush of celebrations everywhere),” says Antonio Natali, “the readings will turn to thoughts, that is, to the plots and contents illustrated. It will be the thoughts that will prevail over the figurative language; of which, on the other hand, will be reasoned anyway. Of Cosimo I, on the other hand, the intellectual depth that informed his archaeological collecting will be commented on. Since both of them - Leonardo and Cosimo - were protagonists (albeit in different spheres) of Florentine culture between humanism and the ’modern manner,’ we thought it would be appropriate to also provide reasoning that would give an account of those ideological dispositions, which are also conceptually correlated.”

The series of meetings will be held at theAntica Canonica di San Giovanni in Florence (Piazza San Giovanni 7), from Jan. 15 to May 21, 2019, on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. Admission is free, without reservation, subject to availability.

Antonio Natali’s second lecture will be held on January 29 and will be entitled Leonardo, Vasari and the birth of the ’modern manner.’ On Feb. 12 it will be Gigetta Dalli Regoli ’s turn with A Beginning Painter and a Young Poetess: Leonardo and Ginevra de’ Benci, while on Feb. 26 Vincenzo Farinella will talk about Leonardo and the Ancient. On March 12 Andrea Baldinotti with Nobility and Beauty: Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. Leonardo and the Vasarian concept of “grace” will be the topic of Timothy Verdon ’s sixth lecture on March 26; while on April 9 Marino Biondi with Destiny of Humanism. On April 23 Sergio Givone with Forma e deformazione dall’Alberti a Leonardo; on May 7 Fabrizio Paolucci with Sotto il segno dell’Antico: il collezionismo archeologico di Cosimo I. Finally, the last event, on May 21, 2019, will be with Gianluca Garelli and Humanism beyond Humanism.
