First edition of Bolzano Art Weeks kicks off

From Sept. 24 to Oct. 3, 2021, the first edition of Bolzano Art Weeks will take place: more than 80 exhibition projects throughout the city and more than 70 institutions, artists and protagonists of the South Tyrolean art scene involved.

It opens on Friday, September 24, 2021, the first edition of BAW - Bolzano Art Weeks, a collective event that will run until October 3, 2021 throughout the city of Bolzano, bringing together over ten days more than eighty diffuse exhibition projects and involving more than seventy institutions, associations, artists, and protagonists of the South Tyrolean art and cultural scene.

The initiative is the brainchild of curator and cultural manager Nina Stricker, who states: “BAW - Bolzano Art Weeks intends to gather and give impetus, to catalyze and explode collective energies that have been dormant for so long, to follow months of closure with fertile weeks of festive openness, to return to urban life to explore the city in its complexity and variety in order to make art once again an experience of production and fruition for many, after a particularly difficult period of isolation and forced immobility.”

Against the backdrop of the major exhibitions just opened in Museion, ar/ge Kunst and those of Transart, Foto Forum/Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare that will open as part of BAW, among the most significant events is the exhibition of Christian Fogarolli’s large-scale tapestry Recycled Brain, the result of a residency course that the artist led, at the invitation of A Collection APS, together with master weaver Giovanni Bonotto and under the supervision of Chiara Casarin, and which will be presented in collaboration with Galerie Alberta Pane at BAW’s Pre-opening on Sept. 23. Also, Lottozero’s Art and Textile exhibition, Marcello Jori’s Open Studio curated by Kathrin Oberrauch, and Stefano Cagol’s performance TIME INFLUENCE (Chess Flu). The artist enacts a kind of chess game as a performance on the monumental chessboard he made fourteen years ago at Mignone Park: a meditation on time in a moment of subversion of its individual, collective and universal dimensions. Finally, the participatory installation Disco for one by Greek artist Maria Papadimitriou exhibited at the last Biennale Gherdëina and re-installed in front of the Bolzano Municipal Theater on the occasion of the Musical I Feel Love in homage to Giorgio Moroder’s music.

Among the places to discover, Maria Heim with works by Elisabeth Hölzl, Arnold Mario dall’Ò and Stefano Bernardi or Castel Hörtenberg with photographs by Ulrich Egger; noteworthy are the new proposals of other artists invited by BAW such as those of Christian Martinelli, Franziska Schink and Antonio Villa.

BAW - Bolzano Art Weeks is organized by Cooperative 19 and Südtiroler Künstlerbund with support from the Italian Culture and German Culture Departments of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the South Tyrol Savings Bank Foundation.
