Florence Light Festival 2021 lights up the squares and monuments for the Christmas Holidays

From December 8, 2021 to January 9, 2022, the Florence Light Festival 2021 is scheduled: the festival of lights that lights up the squares and monuments for the Christmas Holidays. Florence will be filled with light and art installations, projections, and light games.

From the Ponte Vecchio to the Galilei Museum, from Piazza San Lorenzo to the Chamber of Commerce to Piazza Santissima Annunziata. And again, all the way to the towers, city gates and suburbs. The whole city lights up with Florence Light Festival 2021, every day, from 5 p.m. to midnight, from December 8, 2021 to January 9, 2022.

It is the festival of lights promoted by the City of Florence and organized by MUS.E, under the artistic direction of Sergio Risaliti, which will fill buildings, squares and monuments with light and art installations, projections, light games, striking illuminations. Reflections. Where we are, where we are going is the title of the 2021 edition of an event that confirms itself among the most important of its kind. “This year is a time for ’Reflections’ and mirrors. To look inside and understand who we are and where we are going,” explains Sergio Risaliti, curator of F-Light. “Reflections and mirrors to know and recognize ourselves together with others. Reflections and reflections from corner to corner, from point to point, on buildings and in squares. Christmas is also this twinkling of lights and reflections. A little bit of joy after two years in the dark of night that we have known and suffered with the pandemic. Time of rebirth and change. The lights reflect on the current of the Arno River, a metaphor of becoming, of the running of time.”

Thus, videomapping on the Ponte Vecchio will be monumental projection on the theme of “reflection.” While. at the conclusion of the Dante year, the projections on the facade of the Museo Galileo and the Chamber of Commerce will propose a vision of the Divine Comedy as a mirror of the human condition; the installation on the side of the Basilica of San Lorenzo will see a collage of stylistic features that winds between the past of myths such as “Narcissus” and a reflection linked to contemporaneity. And again, on the facade of the Istituto degli Innocenti in Piazza Santissima Annunziata, a visual artwork will come to life, symbolically representing man’s ability to poetically exploit big data and the computational flows of artificial intelligence. The loggia of the Museo Novecento will also light up again for the occasion, as will the facade of the Forte Belvedere building, the Mint Tower, the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, the Ramps of Giuseppe Poggi, and all the gates and towers surrounding the center.

As usual, F-Light - Firenze Light Festival will not be limited to the historic center but will also light up the other four Florentine neighborhoods throughout the Christmas season: in District 2 the light tree in Piazza delle Cure and a large star in Settignano will make an appearance, in District 3 the luminaries on Piazza Bartali in Gavinana and Piazza Acciaiuoli in Galluzzo will be the stars. And again in District 4 the tree with the light tunnel in Piazza dell’Isolotto and the fountain of lights in Piazza Paolo Uccello will return. Finally, in Neighborhood 5 a large luminous star will appear in San Donato Park, Novoli, and a composition of spheres in Dalmatia Square. The event, carried out under the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Florence, with the contribution of the Florence Chamber of Commerce, the support of Terna and American Express, the support of Unicoop Firenze and EuroAmbiente Green solutions and thanks to Firenze Smart, will see as usual the city involved in its entirety: from the squares and monuments of the historic center to the suburbs.

On the occasion of F-light 2021, the Sala d’Arme of Palazzo Vecchio will also host the final exhibition of WONDERFUL! (Dec. 8, 2021 - Jan. 12, 2022), the prize in support of Italian art under 40 organized by the Museo Novecento promoted by the Department of Culture of the City of Florence in collaboration with MUS.E and realized thanks to the commitment of Publiacqua. The WONDERFUL! was created in response to the pandemic to give concrete recognition and support to the new generation of Italian artists, hard hit, along with the entire art system, by the health and economic crisis. Through a public selection in which 290 artists participated, a technical jury chose theyoung Binta Diaw, Riccardo Giacconi, Marco Giordano and Margherita Raso, who were awarded a one-year scholarship and whose works-installations and videos-will now be presented in the Sala d’Arme, enriching the F-light program.
