Moisai returns to Domus Aurea: performance art in the sign of the contemporary dedicated to the Muses

From May 5 to 21, 2023, "Moisai - Contemporary Voices in Domus Aurea" returns after the success of the first edition: performance art starting from the statuary cycle of the Muses made for Nero and preserved, in fragments, inside the Domus.

After the success of the first edition, Moisai - Contemporary Voices in Domus Aurea returns from May 5 to 21, 2023, an evocative opportunity to immerse oneself in the places of the imperial residence that best reflect one of the best-known aspects of the figure of Nero, but rarely investigated: his love for Art. Starting with the statuary cycle of the Muses, made for the emperor and preserved, in fragments, inside the Domus, a guided tour will culminate in the experience ofperformance art, conjugated in all its different shades, in the sign of the contemporary.

The event, promoted and organized by the Colosseum Archaeological Park with artistic direction by PAV, is divided into nine encounters, each dedicated to one of the nine Muses of myth. In each evening, a new artist will release the song of a different Muse, making herself its contemporary spokesperson in a very ancient gesture, loose and accomplished in the rooms of the Sala Ottagona, an extraordinary scenic machine created by the architects Severus and Celerus at the behest of Nero’s visionary project.

Moisai 2023. Contemporary Voices in Domus Aurea will open May 5 for three weekends, Friday through Sunday. Guided tours inside the Domus will be followed by event evenings for a total of nine dates. The visits will be accompanied by an immersive sound path specially designed for the event. From the silent corners of the Domus will echo sounds and voices of ancient and modern languages, where the names of the nine muses emerge as ancestral fragments of a timeless poetic discourse.

It starts on May 5 with Pastorale - site specific, conception and creation Daniele Ninarello. On May 6 it will be the turn of L’Ira di Achille by and with Mimmo Cuticchio. It will continue on May 7 with Apotheosis of a Pumpkin - funeral scherzo in death of Divus Claudius, with Tullio Solenghi and Pino Quartullo.

The second weekend will feature on May 12 the show Monumentum The Second Sleep - Part One - the solo, conception, choreography, set design, live sound processing by Cristina Kristal Rizzo, dance by Megumi Eda. On May 13, appointment with Miss Lala Al Circo Fernando / live music, with Marigia Maggipinto, conception and direction Chiara Frigo. Isabella Ferrari will star in the May 14 performance, The Heroines, based on Ovid’s Heroides, piano Roberto Prosseda.

Elena Bucci and Luigi Ceccarelli will debut instead on May 19 with Se resistere dipende dal cuore - listening to Amelia Rosselli. On May 20, appointment with Fabrizio Bentivoglio in Lettura Clandestina, double bass Ferruccio Spinetti. Moisai 2023 will conclude on May 21 with Every Brilliant Thing (The things worth living for), directed by Fabrizio Arcuri, co-directed and performed by Filippo Nigro.

“The Colosseum Archaeological Park successfully continues to experiment with innovative synergies to offer its audiences new forms of dialogue with the past: again this year, the goal of the thematic guided tour series in Nero’s palace, inspired by the nine Muses, will culminate in a different artistic performance for each event of the festival, from dance to music, from theater to poetry,” commented Alfonsina Russo, Director General of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. “A unique opportunity to live an experience between the past and the contemporary, through a fascinating and poetic path that restores new life to the Sala Ottagona.”
