On the occasion of Epiphany, visits and activities were organized to the Chapel of the Magi, a masterpiece frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli inside Palazzo Medici Riccardi

On the occasion ofEpiphany, Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, the Metropolitan City of Florence and MUS.E are organizing tours and activities in the Chapel of the Magi, a masterpiece frescoed by Benozzo Gozzoli between 1459 and 1462 at the Medici Riccardi Palace.

The Following the Star initiative will include visits at 12 noon and 3 p.m. to learn more about the history and iconography of the Chapel of the Magi, where the cavalcade of the Magi following the Star is depicted, and to understand the connection of this place with the other rooms of the palace and with the Medici’s history. Activities are also planned, at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., for children and their families to engage in an art workshop on the Three Kings.

The Chapel testifies to the deep connection the Medici family had with the feast of the Magi, which was established in Florence in the late 14th century and developed in the following century, thanks to the confraternity of the Compagnia dei Magi, which was based in San Marco and to which the wealthiest Florentines belonged. The ceremony, a ride along the streets of the city center, took on an important representative, symbolic and political role over time, as it mirrored the family’s princely pomp and ambitions.

Benozzo Gozzoli depicted the Magi accompanied by a crowded procession of knights, grooms, hunters and servants in a fairy-tale landscape.
