An exhibition in Romagna traces the entire career of Mario Sironi


On view until Oct. 22 is the retrospective exhibition that Romagna Fiere is dedicating to Mario Sironi, an undisputed protagonist of early 20th century art. Fifty works are on display.

It opened its doors on September 16 and will last until October 22, the exhibition Mario Sironi. Retrospective homage that the city of Cesena dedicates to Mario Sironi (Sassari, 1885 - Milan, 1961), a leading exponent of Futurism, then proponent of the “return to order,” founder of the Novecento group and regime artist during Fascism. The exhibition takes place in the spaces of the Galleria Comunale d’Arte Palazzo del Ridotto in the city of Romagna (not far from the Biblioteca Malatestiana) and, through fifty works covering a period between 1914 and 1958 and coming from the collection of Andrea Sironi-Strausswald (the artist’s nephew), from the collection of the Galleria Cinquantasei in Bologna and from a number of private collections, traces the entire career of the artist of Sardinian origin.

There are three sections on which the exhibition, curated by the staff of Edizioni Cinquantasei Bologna, is divided: one dedicated to painting with works that cover the entire artistic career of Mario Sironi, a second dedicated toillustration with works from 1915 to 1925 and one on the great decorative enterprises of the period 1934-1938. Then also space to investigate mural painting, a genre in which Sironi excelled and for which he is mainly remembered by the general public: interesting in this sense is a preparatory sketch depicting Venice, Italy and Studies, executed in 1936 for the Aula Magna of Ca’ Foscari in Venice, as well as a female figure with book and musket, a sketch for the great Dux fresco for the Casa Madre dei Mutilati in Rome.

The exhibition, as mentioned, runs from Sept. 16 to Oct. 22 and can be visited with free admission: on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 7:30 p.m., and on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays double openings, mornings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and afternoons from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Closed on Mondays. From Oct. 27-30, the exhibition will move to Cesena Fiera during the 21st edition of Arte Forlì-Cesena Contemporanea. Organized by Romagna Fiere and Galleria Cinquantasei Bologna.
