At MASI in Lugano, a journey through the ice with Julian Charrière

From Oct. 27, 2019, to March 15, 2020, MASI in Lugano offers the exhibition Towards No Earthly Pole, a journey through the ice with Swiss Julian Charrière

MASI in Lugano is hosting from October 27, 2019 to March 15, 2020 the exhibition Towards No Earthly Pole dedicated to Swiss artist Julian Charrière (Morges, 1987). The title of the exhibition refers to Charrière’s project of the same name: his latest film begun in 2017 and made among the Swiss Rhone and Aletsch glaciers, Mont Blanc, Iceland and Greenland.

The artist intends to turn attention to the links between colonial and environmental history by addressing themes such as the history of science, the development of media culture, the romance of exploration, and the contemporary ecological crisis. It also aims to offer reflections on the pathos of contemporary geographical imagery.

Premiered at MASI in Lugano, the exhibition project will be viewable in a repurposed version at theAargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau and the Dallas Museum of Art.

The artist currently lives and works in Berlin. Throughout his career he has exhibited in museums and institutions around the world, such as the Parasol Unit Foundation for Art in London, the Muséand Cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne, the Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris, the Palais du Tokyo in Paris, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, the Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, the Reykjavik Art Museum in Iceland, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo; the Kochi-Muziris Biennial in India, the 12th Lyon Biennial, and the 57th Venice Biennale. He opened his first solo exhibition at MAMbo - Museum of Modern Art in Bologna. Charrière has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the Kiefer Hablitzel Award during the Swiss Art Awards in 2013 and 2015 and the Kaiserring Stipendium für junge Kunst in 2016.

The exhibition is curated by Tobia Bezzola and was designed in collaboration with the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau.
